Who are we

 

IAABO Board #53 is the Western New York chapter of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO). We are a nonprofit service and professional organization dedicated to the education, development, and ongoing training of basketball officials at all levels of competition.

Our board serves Erie, Niagara, and parts of Orleans County and is committed to maintaining the highest standards of basketball officiating while fostering a culture of fair play and sportsmanship.

 

Why we do this

As a member of IAABO, you’re part of the only international organization exclusively for basketball officials. Since its founding in 1921, IAABO has remained focused on:

• Educating, training, and developing basketball officials

• Promoting the welfare of the game, players, and officials

• Maintaining top-tier officiating standards

• Encouraging fair play and sportsmanship

• Ensuring an adequate supply of highly trained officials

• Collaborating with basketball-related organizations to support the game’s integrity and growth

Our comprehensive training includes:

• Online courses that cover both rules and mechanics

• Video lessons, quizzes, and practice exams

• Written and on-court evaluations under the guidance of certified IAABO professionals

• Ongoing education through clinics, annual testing, and resources like Sportorials and IAABO manuals

 

IAABO equips officials not only with rules knowledge, but also with tools for ethics, professionalism, legal awareness, game management, and communication with players and coaches. It’s more than a certification — it’s a professional path.
